A staggering 821 million people go to bed hungry every night, a stat that Heifer International wants to change.

"We believe that everyone deserves a life free from hunger and poverty, so we work alongside local farmers and small-business owners in 21 countries around the world to help them provide nutritious food for their families and to produce goods to sell for income," Liz Ellis, corporate brand partnerships manager, said in an interview with FastCasual.

To achieve its mission of ending poverty and hunger while caring for the planet, Heifer partners with restaurant brands to "Take Hunger Off the Menu," which means they work together to raise funds and awareness. The company provides brands with all the assets, information and resources needed to show the impact their brand is having on ending global hunger.

"We will tell your customers the story of how Heifer provides farming communities with the livestock and sustainable agricultural training they need to lift themselves out of poverty," Ellis said. "Rather than handing out short-term aid, we give our farmers the business skills to connect to markets and increase their income. Since 1944, our teach-a-person to fish methods have helped over 188 million people escape the bonds of poverty and move towards earning true living incomes."

Every family that receives resources and/or training agrees to "Pass-On" that gift to another family. And the gifting keeps on going. On average, every Heifer gift is passed on nine times, Ellis said.
