City officials in Bettendorf, Iowa, have proposed an annual $500 fee for food trucks, according to The Quad-City Times.
Jeff Reiter, economic development director, said an analysis of property taxes for 20 restaurants resulted in the proposed $500 fee. This was determined based on those properties paying $3.72 per square-foot. The average square footage of a food truck is 128 square feet.
Denice Enfield, the city's public relations, social media and event specialist, said the fees would be $155 lower than those charged in the neighboring city of Davenport.
Participation in a one-time event would cost $75.
Unlike Davenport, Enfield said the ordinance would not have zones for food trucks since it would hinder business.
Trucks would need an application approved by the city council to operate on public property, and approval from the Park Board to operate in a park.
They would need a property owner’s permission to operate on private property.
