Boston TV report questions food truck sanitation inspections

November 7, 2019

WCBV-TV in Boston has examined the city's sanitation inspection practices for food trucks and uncovered some concerns about food safety grades. The TV station explored the inspections due to the increasing number of food trucks.

City inspectors closed 13 food trucks since January of last year, mostly for employees being unable to wash their hands, according to the report. Consumers, however, are not likely to know this since every food truck that was closed now has an A grade, according to the report.

While food trucks are inspected once a year, the trucks are advised in advance of the inspections, the report noted. In addition, a food truck owner can arrange a second inspection if they are dissatisfied with their grade.

Dion Irish, the city's inspectional services commissioner, defended the inspection system.
