It's always better to learn from someone else's mistakes then to make them, and in this case, that "someone" is the retail industry.
The success of Amazon, and other major retail disruptors, has changed how people shop, which has lead to a variety of major store brands filing for bankruptcy, such as Nine West and Gordman's shuttering under performing stores like Forever 21, Kmart and Sears or closing completely like Toys R Us.
"Restaurants can learn a lot from those failures," said Cherryh Cansler, editor of Fast Casual and emcee of the annual Restaurant Franchising and Innovation Summit, taking place March 16-18 in Atlanta. The summit is hosting a talk to facilitate such a discussion. Speakers on the panel, "Connect, Diversify, Differentiate: What Restaurants Can Learn From Retail," include:
"Just like in the retail space, there are many options for restaurant customers, which means brands must be nimble and innovative but also trustworthy to keep loyal customers," Cansler said. "Our speakers will talk about how they pull it off."
