Celebrities like Backstreet Boys' Howie Dorough, comedian Joe Piscopo and Chef David Burke are doing their parts to remind people of the importance of washing hands (for 20 seconds) to help slow the spread of COVID-19. And in the process, they are supporting families of restaurant workers affected by the pandemic.
They've taken to social media as part of an online challenge called #washawaycovid19 started by CORE (Children of Restaurant Employees), a non-profit that serves families of food and beverage service employees needing support as a result of health crises. As COVID-19 continues to spread, the more than 15 million families of food and beverage employees have been among the first to feel its significant national impact, according to a CORE press release.
The #washawaycovid19 challenge asks people to post videos of themselves washing their hands (for the CDC-recommended length of 20 seconds) on social media, as a reminder of this simple yet important task.
Celebrities are also asking people to visit CoreGives.org to donate to the CORE COVID-19 Relief Fund, which provides support directly to families in need due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, and covers expenses for qualifying families including rent or mortgage utilities, medical bills and suppliers, hospital expenses for family members (travel, food, gas), child needs (diapers, formula), childcare costs and more. Participating celebs include:
