Food trucks in Columbia, Missouri hope to gain three additional downtown serving locations under a new ordinance that a local food truck group worked on with restaurants, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune. The ordinance will be reviewed by the city council in 2018.
Currently, food trucks are permitted on Walnut Street between Ninth and Tenth Street, on Cherry Street between Sixth and Seventh Street, and on Locust from Ninth to Tenth Street. The Downtown Community Improvement District, consisting of local food truck owners, says the existing ordinance does not meet consumer demand for food trucks.
The new ordinance allows for three additional locations for a total of six parking options downtown: in front of the court house on Walnut from Seventh to Eighth Street, in front of Artlandish on Walnut from Tenth to Hitt Street, and in front of City Hall on Eighth Street between Walnut and Broadway.
The Downtown CID worked with the Missouri Restaurant Association's Mid-Missouri director on the new ordinance. Brick-and-mortar restaurants near the proposed locations were consulted.
