Decatur stalls plan to let food trucks on private property

November 2, 2018

A plan to allow private property owners in Decatur to host food trucks is on hold after council members raised questions about the food truck licensing process, according to DecaturDaily.com.

A March proposal from the Planning Commission recommended that private owners be allowed to host the trucks whenever they wanted to, according to the report. Current regulations only allow food trucks to operate on private property a maximum of three days as part of a special event, and they require a one-day break between events.

Councilman Chuck Ard told the paper he doesn't want to "do anything that would hurt brick and mortar restaurants." He said that other city officials feel the same way about the issue.

Council President Paige Bibbee told the paper that she is not opposed to allowing the trucks on private property, but that the council wants a process whereby the food truck operator must get a license from the Finance Department, as well as a police background check and a health inspection.
