Detroit public schools enlist food trucks in student meal program

October 7, 2019

Students in the Detroit public schools will have the option of buying meals from food trucks under a program funded by a $307,000 federal grant, according to a Detroit Free Press report. The Detroit Public Schools Community District is purchasing the trucks from Food Truck Shop, a Canton, Michigan food truck builder.

The district, which offers free lunch and breakfast to about 50,000 students, hopes the two trucks will improve the current 70% school food participation rate.

The trucks will serve at high schools and elementary schools. During the summer, the trucks will provide meals under the Meet Up and Eat Up food program for students in need of meals.

The trucks will serve Philly cheese steaks, tacos, Asian noodle bowls, mac and cheese and other meals.
