Fees, parking restrictions drive Des Moines food trucks to the suburbs

April 23, 2018

A combination of fees and parking difficulties are causing many food truck operators to relocate from the city of Des Moines to the suburbs, according to The Des Moines Register. The city has issued only three mobile vendor permits this year, compared with 15 last year and 21 in 2016.

Food truck owners must pay $1,750 in permitting and parking fees to the city annually and are restricted to certain locations. Some food truck owners have decided the cost isn't worth the reward and are leaving downtown for free parking at suburban business parks.
