Food truck ordinance proved to be Wyoming city's top 2018 controversy

December 28, 2018

Casper, Wyoming's food truck ordinance proved to be the city's biggest controversy in 2018, according to the Casper Star-Tribune. The city council passed an ordinance in June that allowed the trucks to continue parking downtown with several restrictions.

The downtown community became divided about food trucks after Frontier Brewing Company invited trucks to park in front of its building on weekends.

Vice Mayor Charlie Powell said the controversy was the "exact opposite" of what the city wanted to see downtown and he hoped the two sides could make amends.

Under the ordinance, food truck operators are required to pay a $25 fee per day and per parking space downtown spots, and can only park in the city's center after 3 p.m. on weekdays and after 1 p.m. on weekends.

Food truck operators are required to have permit applications co-signed by a downtown business owner or manager, and the space requested has to be within 30 feet of that property. The law also restricts the number of vendors who can park within a given downtown block to 10 per month.
