Galesburg, Illinois considers food truck ordinance

June 30, 2017

Food trucks in Galesburg, Illinois will have designated parking options on public streets if the city council approves a proposed ordinance, according to The Register-Mail.

The city and the Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development drafted the ordinance that would limit the areas in which food trucks can operate to specific zones on public property, chosen by City Manager Todd Thompson.

Food truck owners would also have to pay an annual license for a fee of $250. Under existing law, food trucks can only operate on private property and are required to pay $150 for an annual license.

KCAPED studied national trends to gauge the popularity of the industry, and reviewed food truck ordinances from around the country.

Food truck owners would also have to provide their own trash receptacles and pick up trash within a 50-foot radius. The trucks could not operate between 2:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., and all operators would need to have a food sanitation license from the Knox County Health Department. Food trucks also would not be allowed to park within 500 feet of any special event without written permission from the event operator.
