The Salvation Army is operating a mobile food pantry in Goldenrod Park, in Wichita, Kansas, to help ease stress in communities that are considered "food deserts."

The food pantry launched this week with the support of several community groups and will serve three areas in Wichita where food resources are scarce, according to a report at The Wichita Eagle.

"It's going to be primarily nutritious items that are hard to find like fruits and vegetables, possibly some meats," Major Merrill Powers, Salvation Army area commander, told the news outlet. "Anything you would need for the basics of a nutritious meal, we're going to try to get out."

The truck will operate four days a week near three Wichita community centers that have large populations of lower income residents and without full-service grocery store chains.
