The Dotte Mobile Grocer's Mobile Market Community Council plans to introduce a food truck to provide healthy and affordable food in Kansas communities that do not have sufficient food resources, according to the Wyandotte Daily. Local grocery stores have closed in recent years, leaving more than 800,000 Kansas residents with insufficient sources for produce, meat and other staples.
The mobile grocer won't work in all of Kansas' food-scarce areas. In Kansas City, the truck will be able to serve 15 stops, reaching as many as 44,000 people, without having to travel long distances. In less densely populated, rural communities, however, more time will be needed driving from one location to the next, resulting in less time selling and lower profit margins.
Matt Kleinmann, a University of Kansas doctoral student who facilitates the community council, said grants will fund the truck for its first year, after which other funding sources will be needed.
