A hotel owner has proposed to redevelop a rundown area of Key West to create a park that could include food trucks, according to the Miami Herald.
The proposal, which would include landscaping and sculptures, has met resistance from some residents who want to maintain the area’s traditional character. The area includes the Southernmost House hotel mansion, a nationally recognized landmark.
A group called Keep Old Town Old has opposed ideas for businesses — such as a food truck park and a sidewalk cafe — that would pay rent to the city.
City commissioners are scheduled to vote on the proposal Aug. 8 during a meeting that starts at 6 p.m. at Key West City Hall.
