Louisville lawmakers seek changes to food truck ordinance

August 23, 2019

Louisville lawmakers are aiming to revamp the city's proposed food truck ordinance, a move welcomed by food truck operators who oppose it, according to a wave3.com report.

Food truck operators claim the ordinance sent for council's review uses vague language and would hinder their ability to continue operating in certain locations and to operate catering businesses.

Leah Stewart, president of the Louisville Food Truck Association, said food trucks appreciate having a chance to provide input. She also said there is a perception that certain council members are pandering to brick-and-mortar restaurants, based on emails provided by the Institute for Justice, which provides legal assistance to the food truck association.

The institute claimed emails from Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith to a restaurant owner indicated the councilwoman put up "no food truck" signs on meters at the restaurant's request, in violation of the law.

Sexton Smith said she was answering constituent concerns about the fair use of public streets and public safety.
