Minneapolis suburb requires food trucks to use compostable cups

January 3, 2020

St. Louis Park, Minnesota, as of Jan. 1, requires food trucks to use compostable cups and lids and to recycle recyclable lids, according to a Star Tribune report.

The rule will also apply to all other foodservice establishments starting July 1, 2020.

Foodservice establishments as of Jan. 1 are also required to only offer customers straws upon request.

The city allows the following exemptions to the new rules through July 1, 2020:

  • Paper food wraps and liners such as fast food wrappers.
  • Certain portion cups and lids: rigid polystyrene #6, two ounces or smaller.
  • Molded fiber products such as clamshells, containers and bowls, etc.
  • Paper plates
  • Asian takeout pails, such as fold-up style plastic-lined paper.
