Strike rumblings are getting louder around a potential restaurant worker job action planned to take place Monday, May 1, including a planned massive labor march in the nation's capitol. However, a run-up event scheduled for today at noon featuring food service worker advocacy organization, the Restaurant Opportunities Center, or ROC, and former U.S. presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Facebook Live has been canceled, with little information regarding the cause.
Sanders has been an advocate for increased wages as well as the elimination of lower wages for tipped workers and ROC wrote in a news release that Sanders will introduce federal legislation around the so-called "One Fair Wage" topic in the Senate next week in partnership with U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, who is introducing a companion bill in the House. Last week, the Restaurant Opportunities Center United joined a lawsuit against the Trump Administration alleging it is violating the foreign emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution, which deals with business conflicts of interest for office-holders.
Likewise, various workers advocacy groups and individuals are supporting a proposed restaurant worker strike on Monday, May 1.
