Monterey Park, California mulls food truck restrictions

November 7, 2017

Lawmakers are considering regulations for Monterey Park, California's unofficial food truck row in front of Ralphs supermarket, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

One of the more significant changes proposed by the city council at its last meeting was limiting the times food trucks could operate. Councilmen Stephen Lam and Peter Chan proposed adding a two-hour limit for the trucks to park in any one spot.

Lam suggested painting the curb in front of Ralphs red to prevent food trucks from parking there.

Mayor Teresa Real Sebastian said this would lead to the trucks moving elsewhere, possibly taking parking space where people park to patronize businesses.

Some councilmen suggested finding empty lots where food trucks could relocate. But Ron Bow, city manager, cautioned this would not ensure food trucks would frequent the location.
