The City of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is taking several steps to expand its food truck pilot initiative, including increasing the number of operators in the pilot and evaluating where food trucks can do business.
A proposed ordinance would add 14 permits to the program, for a total of 20 in the pilot. It would also change restrictions regarding where trucks can park in proximity to brick-and-mortar restaurants, according to a WMBF News report. Lawmakers have also decided to classify food carts as food trucks in terms of regulatory oversight.
The pilot program, which had been scheduled to conclude this year, is being extended for another year.
"One of the things we talked about was possibly finalizing this, but since we're still new, it's still a young industry, it wouldn't hurt to have another year on the pilot program," Myrtle Beach Planning Director Carol Coleman told WMBF.
