The New York City Department of Health wants to require food trucks to carry GPS devices to make it easier for inspectors to find them, according to The New York Post. Officials say that one-fifth of the city's 5,500 licensed food trucks are not getting checked.
Opponents claim that the rule would discriminate against immigrant food truck operators. Matt Shapiro, speaking for a group called the Street Vendor Project, said that most food truck operators are immigrants and the information could fall into the wrong hands, based on the aggressive stance federal government officials have been taking on immigration.
A department spokesperson said that the information would be used only for inspections and the city will not share location information with anyone else unless required by law.
