Philadelphia Inquirer calls on cities to foster food trucks

January 27, 2020

The Philadelphia Inquirer has taken the city of Camden, New Jersey to task in an editorial for requiring food trucks to have one-day permits to operate, pointing out that the city — which has been branded a "food desert" for its lack of food options — is missing out on a rising industry that is contributing to urban life and creating jobs.

Camden has received tax breaks for employers, the editorial noted, which is all the more reason to give workers there more options to buy food. With more people working in the city, more people need to be fed. Beyond simply allowing food trucks to operate, Camden should be looking for ways to foster them, the editorial said.

"It's time for Camden, and Philly, to figure out how best to benefit from this fresh gastronomic and economic energy," the editorial stated.
