Those grabbing a free pizza slice recently at Gerry's Partisan Pizza, a food truck that stopped in Oakland, Pittsburgh, likely found themselves wondering about the shape of the slice.
That's because the truck's slices are not the typical triangle and that's on purpose, according to a Trib Live report.
In fact the pizza truck is more about educating citizens about gerrymandering than selling pizza as the truck is being sponsored by Represent Us, which is a cross-partisan anti-corruption organization. The truck is on a nationwide tour focused on explaining gerrymandering — a way of manipulating legislative districts and maps by elected officials.
"The issue is the people who decide what the boundaries look like are politicians themselves," Simon Radecki, the group's organizing manager for Pennsylvania, told the news outlet. "When they draw those lines unfairly because of things like splitting up cities or communities for their own political benefit, that's gerrymandering."
Hence the reason why the truck's slices aren't all the same shape.
"If you ask the guy behind the counter for a pizza slice and you get something other than what you ask for, you're not going to get what you enjoy," he told the news outlet. "It's the same thing with gerrymandering."
