Portland, Tennessee's city council approved the first reading of a resolution that would allow food trucks to operate during breakfast hours starting at 5:30 a.m.

If approved on subsequent readings, food trucks would be able to operate from 5:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., as long as property owners agree to it, according to a report by The Portland Sun.

"This change was mainly done to accommodate people who were serving coffee beverages, to try to start serving those earlier in the morning," Alderman Jody McDowell told the news outlet.

During the meeting, Alderman Charles Cole asked the fees committee to reexamine the free structure due to concerns of the city losing sales tax dollars, as food trucks pay the sales tax to the municipality they are registered under rather than Portland.

Currently food trucks pay a $100 application fee, $50 for a special event or $250 for a full access permit.
