An Oceanside, California couple is operating a food truck in a parking lot off Aero Drive in San Diego to serve the homeless, according to a report in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Davinger Singh and Harisimran Khalsa began feeding the homeless at a table in an Oceanside park last year until the city advised they needed a permit. They formed the Duwara Consciousness Foundation to raise money for a food truck to feed the homeless. A November article about the project in The San Diego Union-Tribune prompted donations, and a Phoenix food truck builder gave them a break on a vehicle, which helped bring their plan to reality. The food truck now serves the homeless at a parking lot operated by Jewish Family Service.
Carole Yellen, the director of strategic partnership for Jewish Family Service, said people at the parking lot get food from Starbucks daily, while a group from various churches brings food every other week and Sammy's Woodfired Pizza makes donations monthly.
