South Carolina city to consider easing food truck restrictions

June 13, 2017

The Aiken Planning Commission will hold a public hearing concerning mobile food vendors at 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, according to The Aiken Standard, in the Aiken Municipal Building in Aiken, South Carolina. The purpose of the hearing is to let people voice their concerns about food trucks.

Food trucks are permitted within the city limits, but restricted to private property or during special events. The trucks must also have a business license.

The city's planning commissioners have been considering easing restrictions on the food trucks, but some are concerned the food trucks will threaten established brick-and-mortar downtown businesses.

One option would be a buffer zone, similar to those in place in North Augusta, Greenville and other South Carolina cities, that would protect existing businesses but at the same time diversify dining options.
