Springfield, Illinois city officials on Tuesday instructed food trucks to move from Adams Street to Washington Street in response to complaints, according to The State Journal-Register. Some food truck owners worry the move indicates a change in policy that could make it harder for food trucks to operate in the city.
The Illinois Association FFA convention organizers had asked that the food trucks be outside the Bank of Springfield Convention Center to serve convention attendees. The trucks promised to donate a percentage of their sales to the organization.
Mayor Jim Langfelder said he received complaints about the food trucks Tuesday and told public works officials to instruct the trucks to move to the north side of the convention center.
Under existing rules, food trucks must park a minimum of 50 feet from brick-and-mortar restaurants in the downtown area, and at least 300 feet from restaurants outside downtown. There are exceptions for downtown events and festivals.
Food trucks are required to obtain a $250 permit from the city. They also must have a license from the Sangamon County Department of Public Health.
The city also has a list of 18 designated spots that trucks can use on a first-come, first-serve basis. Trucks can apply for a permit to use the spots and pay the meter fee for the day.
