Utica, New York food truck group establishes fire prevention practices

The Utica Food Truck Association in Utica, New York requires its members to carry two types of fire extinguishers, according to the Times Telegram. The group has worked with Utica fire marshals to prevent fires from happening, said Ron Colangelo, the group's vice president.

Colangelo, who owns the food truck Come Fry With Me, said fires inside food trucks can be prevented by proper installation and maintenance of certain equipment — such as propane tanks — as well as cleaning regularly to prevent grease fires.

Bill Morehouse, Utica's comptroller, said his nephew was caught in an explosion involving a can of cooking spray that occurred inside of a food truck in August at a concert at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Morehouse said his nephew suffered burns to the back of his head, back, legs and arm while another individual suffered burns to his face. Both are still in the hospital, he said.
