The Virginia Beach city council recently voted to lower a $300 annual peddler's permit fee to $50. Food truck operators, however, were upset that the council kept on the requirement for background checks for all food truck employees, according to a report by WTKR.
Food truck operators said that some restaurants do not have to do background checks for their employees, which creates an unfair playing ground. The council argued that it's a safety issue for mobile restaurants to hire employees without a background check.
“Employees that I might have considered hiring, I'm not going to take the risk with them. Why spend $40 to hire someone I don't need to hire?" Bob Olson, owner of Pelican Pete's Mobile Pizza, said regarding the $40 background check fee.
The council has currently tabled discussion on the issue until it decides the best course of action, according to the report.
