The planning commission in Newport News, Virginia, has recommended new rules for food trucks to make it easier for operators to do business in the city, includng allowing food trucks to operate on business property within specific zones with the property owner's permission, according to the Daily Press.
John Harris, owner of JG's BBQ, asked city council in November to allow food trucks on private property. He said the existing rules have prevented him from operating his mobile kitchen.
The city presently allows food trucks to park at Oakland Industrial Park in the city and downtown near Newport News Shipbuilding.
Food trucks in other areas must have a temporary use permit with a $200 application fee and approval by a committee.
The city council will consider the proposed changes at its April 23 meeting.
