Virginia town to allow food trucks in commercial districts

January 11, 2019

Food trucks will be permitted in Williamsburg, Virginia, commercial districts under rules approved Thursday by the city council, according to the Virginia Gazette. Food trucks previously were restricted to the Culinary Arts District along Capitol Landing Road from Colonial Parkway to Merrimac Trail.

Food trucks will be permitted on High Street, downtown, in midtown, on Riverside and in Colonial Williamsburg's new Palace Farms. In downtown Williamsburg, a 100-foot buffer will separate food trucks from brick-and-mortar restaurants.

The trucks will also be allowed on public property for special events with a special-use permit approved by the city manager. Truck owners will pay a $50 permit application fee for each event in commercial districts.

The ordinance will also allow food trucks to park in residential zones for two special events annually.
