Food truck regs getting a revamp in Florida community

February 7, 2019

City leaders in Largo, Florida, are mulling a revamp of food truck rules and requirements aimed at streamlining the regulatory process.

A city economic commission is considering rules that would allow trucks to operate without a special event permit, instead requiring the property owner to secure a special permit, a Tampa Bay Newspapers report said.

The proposed change would let property owners apply for a $125 site plan review if they want to host a food truck on their property, according to the report. Special event permits would still be necessary for large events such as public food festivals.

The proposed ordinance also would amend the city's development code to establish provisions governing food truck operations. Currently, food truck operators must purchase $75 permits to operate for 15-day intervals and obtain a business tax receipt if based in Largo, or register as a vendor if not. They also have to provide proof of a state-mandated fire inspection.
