A move to enact an annual food truck fee in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, is receiving support on local editorial pages.
City leaders have said that the growth of food trucks requires legislative action, including a new flat fee, a move that the News-Enterprises editorial board supports.
In an editorial, the news outlet describes the action as having "practical value."
The town is proposing a flat fee of $250 to be paid at the start of the year, with the initial $25 for a business license and the remainder serving as a restaurant tax. Food truck operators would not have to file a monthly restaurant tax return, which would save the city money it now spends to chase down tax payments.
"This measure seems like a practical consideration that eases a paperwork burden on these small vendors while eliminating a collection headache for city government," the editorial said.
