The Food Truck Freedom Act was passed to help food trucks by providing one Texas license that could be used in any locality. However, local food truck operators have raised concerns over the price of the fees, which can be as much as $1,800. In response, Rep. Brooks Landgraf said he is seeking a pause on the bill, according to a report by Yahoo!
Many vendors feel they would be priced out of business by the new fees, especially stationary vendors who stay in food truck parks. In a town hall meeting, Landgraf said he is hoping to hit "pause" to help the "little guy" as he believed the fee structure wasn't properly organized.
"The biggest thing everybody is really concerned about is the fee. The fee jumped $600," Eddie Mitchell, an Odessa City Councilman and owner of Ed & Tom's Bar-B-Que, said in the report. "That's killing people because if you have two food trucks, you've got to pay $2,800 or whatever the total is going to end up being. This is some people's livelihood."
The law is set to take effect on July 1, but Landgraf is working to delay this until January 2027.
