Thieves recently stole catalytic converters out of seven of the food trucks operated by charity Second Harvest. To support them, a local business in Toronto donated $60,000 to help Second Harvest replace the converters, according to a report by CBC.
Thieves cut through the exhaust system to steal the converters, causing an estimated $80,000 worth of damages. CEO Lori Nikkel said that in addition to the donation, they have received large amounts of cash, donations, food and lent food trucks to keep operations going.
"There are great people in this city and they showed up and I'm so grateful that they did," Nikkel said at a news conference Wednesday. "I have tears in my eyes. This is what a great city looks like, so thank you."
Joe Mosacto, president of Aurora Foods, donated the $60,000. Second Harvest expects that it will have the trucks back running in two to three weeks.
