Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt recently signed House Bill 3369, which changes fire safety regulations for food trucks. Under the bill, food trucks can either install a fire suppression system or have two Class K fire extinguishers on site, according to a report by News 9.
The bill aims to give more flexibility to operators.
"We wanted to have a common-sense approach and a practical alternative. So having the two fire extinguishers, one presented in the front of the truck, one presented in the rear of the truck, has an alternative for them to use," bill sponsor Rep. Derrick Hildebrant said in the report.
This bill was passed as an adjustment to another bill that took effect Jan. 1, which required a fire suppression system. Many food truck operators raised concerns about both the expenses of this system and potential safety hazards.
"I've had a number of food truck operators come up and be concerned about the safety of having a fire suppression system discharge or inadvertently discharge while an operator standing in front of a 400-degree vat of oil," Hildebrant said.
House Bill 3369 will take effect on Nov. 1.
